Is cirque du freak a real story?

I read the frist book of cirque du freak and when i read the introduction i found that the story is real but the names of all the characters are fake.And also the author of the book is a female and her name obviously cannot be darren shan.If the story is real then are there vampires in real live?Do they exist?
