Is this unbearably awkward?

It had been awhile since I'd talked to a guy friend of mine who graduated from my high school last year (I'm a senior), and I just texted him a little while ago. I was thinking of seeing if he'd be my prom date- just as friends- but I don't know if that would be really weird, since we're not dating and I haven't seen him in awhile. Help please?!
