Super telephoto for Nikon D2h?

I just got a used D2h from Adorama and would like a super telephoto to shoot sports and wildlife with. I was looking at the older Nikon 300mm f/4 but was wondering about other options as well. my budget is about $700. Everything that I will be ussing the lens for will be outside so a wide aperture (2.8) is not a big need for me. Thanks for the help.
