What is Milk Thistle used for?

I heard that Milk Thistle protects the liver against damage is this true? I read this on several sites so if for example I want to drink a lot of alcohol and I know alcohol in large amounts can damage the liver but if I take Milk Thistle before drinking this amount is it going to help?
