Was God really ok with stoning people?

I saw a snuff video of a Iraqi girl being stoned to death; apprently she fell in love with a sunni boy, when she was not supposed to. A whole mob of people tortured, molested, and humiliated her for 30 min. They then finally dropped cinder block on her head to kill her. Needless to say this was pretty intense. That got me to thinking, is that the kind of thing that god allowed in the old testament? Seems kind of harsh and barbaric.
